section heading icon     retractions

One of the charms of defamation law, for media aficionados, is savouring the retractions offered by publishers who have got it wrong or who have just decided than an apology - sincere or otherwise - makes more sense than being tied up in court.

Some examples are provided by Craig Silverman's Regret The Error site -

  • "In an article on February 3, we implied two thirds of Haitians drank goats' blood while practising voodoo. We are happy to make clear this is not the case."
    London Sun
  • "In my column on August 22, I suggested that Sharon Osbourne was an unemployed, drug-addled, unfit mum with a litter of feral kids. This was not intended to be taken literally. I fully accept she is none of these things and sincerely apologise to Sharon and her family for my unacceptable comments. Sorry Sharon."
    London Sun
